Sneaky Sleeper

Tristen did not want to take a nap today. We played hard. After Calvin got home from school we were playing in the play room. Tristen left to go to the living room (we assumed to grab more trucks and cars). When we went to see what the hold up was (after a few minutes) we found him sound asleep in the recliner.

I guess little man decided he needed to rest his eyes after all.

Finding Perfect Balance

Tristen has been scooting right along with his balance bike. He has grown confident that he even kicks his little feet up off the ground to cruise (at a pretty good speed) without touching the ground. Which is why he now is encouraged to always wear a helmet.

Doctors Office Fun

The past few weeks have been a whirl wind of sickness, snotty noses, ear infections, antibiotics, croupy coughs and doctors visits!

Today we visited our family doctor for Mommy and Calvin.

Mommy – still wheezing with a juicy painful cough.

Calvin – ear infection pain

I think doctors offices have a conspiracy theory against mothers of small children. They try to appease their wait time out of the waiting room (where there is space and lots of toys) and confine the sick Mom and three wild boys into a small 5x5 room for 30+ minutes.

Thus resulting in a caged animal effect!

Needless to say, we have been spending the majority of daylight waking hours outside perfecting our pogo, scoots, and balance!

Someone (either Daddy or Calvin) brought home a pretty nasty germ that has infected EVERYONE in our family. It is a yucky snots, ear infection and respitory infection. There is lots of nose blowing, juicy coughs, and wheezing going on in the Steffen household the past few days.

Mommy has bronchitis and is on antibiotics.

Calvin is on the mend … having been sick for over a week … yet still has the snots and a juicy cough.

Peyton has an ear infection and juicy cough (respitory infection).

Tristen has an ear infection with a juicy cough (borderline RSV and needs to use the nebulizer every 4 hours) *super scary stuff*

Praying for healing and a speedy recovery in our household.

The Steffen boys love dressing up… ALL.THE.TIME. They do not need a holiday or special occasion for these boys to put on a funny costume and let their imaginations run wild. Halloween is no different in our household… well, except for the scary skeleton that made its way into our costume chest.

To kick start the fun evening, we enjoyed a jack-o-lantern pizza from Papa Murphy’s. Yummy!

My best attempt at a group shot of the boys in their costume didn’t happen. Looking on the bright side, however, I was able to take a picture of them in their costumes AND looking at the camera! SUCCESS!

The night ~~madness~~ fun in photos. Atleast, when we first started. Trying to take photos of three crazy costumed children in the dark, on Halloween night is insane. My hands were full making sure they were on the side of the road and safe. :)

The next day, having fun playing dress up… the lion and the horse. If only I could get an action shot of the LION chasing the HORSE… and him ~~eating~~ tickling the horse. Now that would be a hilarious photo opp!

Little Friend & Fire Hoses

Tristen is very attached to his little friend. He is always checking to make sure it is there. On most days, he has it exposed and hanging outside of his diaper. On doing this (hanging out stunt) he has on multiple occasions wet on himself.

To which he does not find it funny!

(Although, Mommy thinks it is hilarious and hopes that he would stop playing with the fire hose – but it does not sway him to stop)

Well… a few days ago his little friend got him into trouble. You see, he and Peyton were playing hide n seek together. They both hide in the same (obvious) spot next to each other, while giggling like crazy and shouting “Mommy! We are ready! Come find us behind the bushes!”

I pretend I can’t find them and take my sweet time.

Only for I to hear this loud shreak come from behind the bushes:

Peyton, “Ew!! Tristen peed on me!”
Tristen, “Ew! Yuck! Peh-ton wet!”
Peyton runs out from behind the bush; his leg, side and underwear covered in wet. Storms out and takes off his wet underwear proclaiming, “I no like Tisten anymore! I need to change my underwear because these are wet!”

Peyton goes and changes. I am doing my best to keep a straight face. When Peyton finally goes inside the house I could not help but laugh. Tristen still had his fire hose out and appeared to be shocked as to what just happened.

Peyton emerged from the house with clean dry underwear and then started chasing Tristen around the front yard, shouting, “You pee on me! I pee on you” He was running with an arch with his own fire hose out attempting to pee on Tristen.

All the neighbors could hear me yelling, “Peyton do not pee on your brother!”

Rainy Day Fun

The rainy season is upon us. Mommy may not be a fan of the cool temperatures, gloomy skies, and rain… but the boys LOVE it!

There is no stopping them. They were super excited for a chance to run and play in the rain, puddles, and more!

Mommy is ready with her rain boots. Peyton is ready, just a “widdle tiny bit” concerned about his “shark hair”.

The boys had a blast! They were shivering (temperatures in the low 60’s) with excitement.
Many cars driving by gave us the weirdest looks: kids stomping in puddles with no shoes on, it is pouring rain, the squeals of laughter and delight from the boys AND MOMMY!

We headed inside to warm up after our fun romp in the puddles. Nothing like good old hot cocoa after all that fun!

Let the Toilet Learning Experience Begin… again…

Tristen has reached the age where he is fascinated with the toilet, bodily functions (and parts) as well as the ‘potty tree’ in our yard. He has shared an interest in going potty for a few months now, but I have politely ignored his requests to sit on the toilet or go potty on the tree.

Yes, I would oblidge and help him pull his diaper down to attempt to pee on the tree like his big brothers.

Yes, I would sit him on the toilet before bath.

Yet there has never been a successful release during those moments.

He is still learning to connect the dots between the feeling of needing to go and actually going. It is a process, and since I am familiar with this game, I am in no hurry to get it done.

This is a process… a learning process.

Tristen has begun the toilet learning experience, and is super excited to try to use the toilet like his big brothers. Mommy… not so enthusiastic. I really don’t enjoy spending the majority of my days sitting on the edge of the bathroom tub or in public restrooms just on the off chance he will actually go in the toilet.

Ah… let the adventure in toilet learning begin… again (3rd time).

We are establishing a new normal with Calvin at school. Peyton, Tristen, and Mommy stay busy doing school, fitness fun, themed lunches, and chores.

Our home school lessons this week are pretty basic. My main goal for THIS week is to establish a routine that is workable and FUN for everyone. Right now we are focusing on Bible, Phonics (ABC’s), and FUN (math & science = cooking).

It has been a busy few days… but so far so good!!

Fitness fun.

The boys joined Mommy in doing a strength workout (helped hide and TAKE her weights as well as use her as a bridge to climb ON and UNDER during her workout).

Both boys LOVE doing school on the computer! Whether the school activity is starfall or HOP they ARE learning and enjoying their time.

Lunch time!! It seems that I am always feeding my children… full tummies = happy boys!

Chore time! Peyton helps Mommy by vacuuming his bedroom.

Today marks a special milestone in our family. Our firstborn, Calvin, heads off to school!! He starts kindergarten today, and is SUPER excited!!

Mommy took him to school and walked him to his classroom. Once we arrived in his classroom, he sat right down and got to work on his coloring project.

I took my cue and gave him a quick hug/rub on his back and told him I loved him… then headed out the door. No tears. No sadness. Just pure excitement (for both of us).

I think he just wanted me to leave… so he could enjoy being a kindergartner!

Continuing with our tradition of before school activities, Calvin and I spent a morning together on a date. We went to a local restaurant and enjoyed lunch (he was craving BLT’s) and enjoyed ice cream afterwards.

They say that God doesn’t give us anything that we can’t handle… yet God has blessed me with three adventurous boys! Funny God… you make me laugh!

Wednesday was a day that happened like any other day. The boys played hard… no rest for the weary (not even Tristen was slowing down to take a nap today!).

Calvin had been working hard creating and perfecting his new master game: Pillow Sledding.

He would start at the end of the hallway, clutch his pillow and head towards the living room at full speed. He then flies through the air in perfect belly flop fashion… or like a professional baseball player would slide on his belly towards a base… with his pillow clutched to his chest.

Only this ONE TIME something went terribly wrong with his master plan.

He slid off his pillow sled.

Landing on his chin.

Scraping his chin on the hard wood floors.

Opening the scrape that was on his chin from a previous stick duel he and his brother, Peyton, had earlier that week.

What does Mommy hear? This is what I heard: laughter, running steps, thud, screech, scream “Ow!”, tears and a scream “MOMMY!”

I turn from breaking up a fight in the bedroom (Peyton and Tristen were fighting over trains) to see Calvin on his stomach with his legs in the air… slowly getting up while clutching his chin. His bleeding chin!

I walk over (not thinking it is as bad as it was) and ask to see his chin.

I gasp. Grab a wet wash cloth and apply it to Calvin’s bleeding chin.

I immediately begin barking orders… Get in the car!!

I have never seen the boys move quicker! Never mind the fact that all the boys are wearing nothing by their chonies. Super Hero to be exact. How appropriate.

We drive the the local medical office, the same office that glued Peyton’s chin together last summer! I hope and pray that they can get him in so I don’t have to drive to town.

I reach for my purse to grab my phone to call Gabe. It is not in my purse!

I reach further to grab my wallet to get my insurance card out. It is not in my purse!

AURG!

I run into the office – at this point looking like a frantic mad woman with blood all over her hands – and let them know that my child busted his chin, I forgot my wallet at the house, and could they get him in to see a doctor. They smile and encourage me to go home and return.

I rush home: grab my phone, wallet, CLOTHES FOR THE BOYS, and do my best to muster up a calm sense of self.

Once we get to the Medical Center they get us/Calvin right in. The boys were dressed – no longer exposing their Super Hero identity.

The doctor glued Calvin back together… three layers of glue.

It was and is a major owie!!

The boys and I enjoy checking the garden each morning… to see if we are able to spot a hungry little caterpillar eating the tomato plants.

Thankfully the boys (and I) have a great eye and can peel these little critters off before causing too much damage to our garden.

Family Camping – Shasta Lake

We made an impromptu decision to go camping this weekend. We didn’t go far – just 45 minutes north to Shasta Lake. The temperatures have been cooler and we knew that we needed to take advantage of the great weather to go camping local this summer.

The boys were SUPER excited. We were excited but a little nervous about camping with just “us” as the last time we attempted it… it was a big bust.

First things first, the boys decided to go hiking and explore our camp site and surroundings.

Next, Peyton and Tristen ‘helped’ Daddy put up the tent. This helping lasted a good 10 minutes of jumping, climbing, and running around the tent.

Third step was to feed them. Actually… my goal was to make sure their tummies were ALWAYS full!

Calvin enjoyed collecting “money” = bottle caps and playing with his little men. He also enjoyed VERY MUCH so roasting his own marshmallows.

The boys enjoyed staying up past their bed time – WAY Late!

The weekend went off without a hitch… until a big log broke and scraped precious Peyton’s face. They were playing karate men and one end of the branch they were chopping … bounced back and chopped the skin right off his upper nose. Poor guy.

We had a great trip… and again… are already planning our next camping adventure!!

We met Caribou and Papa up at Trinity Lake for a quick camping trip in bear country.

Calvin was the master money finder. He found many coins totaling over $0.50 !

The boys played alot of baseball and Frisbee.

Mommy and Daddy were there enjoying the fresh air and great company.

Tristen enjoyed the monkey on the back rides that Daddy offered him.

Peyton and Calvin had a great time and are already looking forward to and planning our next camping trip.
